Becoming an in motion Community
The benefits of being physically active are great, as are the risks of being physically inactive. Successful communities create environments that increase individual and group activity.
Communities that register with in motion receive:
- free consultation and training
- a workbook on implementing a community in motion physical activity strategy, fact sheets and resource materials
- access to promotion materials, such as creative files for posters and brochures
- access to community or regional research data
- recognition on the HEPAC website, which highlights community initiatives and activities
New Brunswick in motion believes in building strong partnerships within communities. Creating supportive environments involves more than facilities and programs.
Successful communities in motion often include the following:
- a strong recreation system that delivers quality, fun, safe, affordable recreation for all members of the community
- schools that promote and provide daily physical activity opportunities for all students and staff
- a strong partnership between community recreation and health organizations
- policies that support and encourage walking, biking and skating instead of using vehicles whenever possible
- supportive community design and infrastructure to reduce barriers and encourage physical activity
- organizational and financial structures and physical and social environments that encourage and support physical activity equally for all members of the community
- messages that encourage and educate the community on physical activity and the importance of healthy eating
There are several ways to get your community in motion:
- Find leaders/champions within your community, such as wellness committees or recreation directors, to lead and support community efforts.
- Connect with existing physical activity groups, plans and networks in your community.
- Create partnerships to avoid duplication and share expertise, resources, knowledge and tools.
- Look at the information available to you to help determine what your community needs.
